  10.       John Paul II, his voice cracking with emotion, attacked a United 
  11. Nations proposal that abortion be considered a health issue. 
  12. Supporting his stand, "History will show one day how this 
  13. inhumanity, so widespread among nations, is no less cruel than the 
  14. attitudes and activities that the massacres carried out by Nazism," said 
  15. Colombian church leader Alfonso Lopez-Trujillo, head of the Council 
  16. for the Family.
  17.       Before a crowd of tens of thousands in St. Peter's Square, John 
  18. Paul pressed an attack he has been waging recently against a planned 
  19. United Nations conference on population. He said women today are 
  20. suffering "attacks against the life they are about to bring into the 
  21. world."
  22.        He prayed for God to defend "every human being in the maternal 
  23. womb who is threatened and invited the faithful to pray for "the help 
  24. needed in the battle against the forces of evil."
  25.       He has recently waged an intense battle against a U.N. population 
  26. conference to be held in Cairo in September. The White House said 
  27. the Pope and President Clinton discussed abortion and the U.N. 
  28. conference in a rare phone call. John Paul has been troubled by 
  29. Clinton's views on abortion. After 12 years of Republican 
  30. administrations opposed to using any funds for abortions, Clinton has 
  31. liberalized U.S. policy dramatically. The U.N. conference is drawing up 
  32. a 20-year plan to stabilize world population at 7.27 billion by the year 
  33. 2050. Its draft document says couples should have a right "to eliminate 
  34. unwanted pregnancies."
  35.       Last month John Paul told all heads of state in a letter that the 
  36. conference could result in a "serious setback for humanity." He 
  37. dispatched a high-level delegation of Vatican family and population 
  38. experts to New York to try to influence the draft at a preparatory 
  39. meeting. He also strongly criticized the conference.
  40.       "The questions before it are not just ones of mere technical 
  41. organization of society to be delegated to economists, sociologists and 
  42. politicians," he said of the conference. "The family comes even before 
  43. the state."
